Land area by country: map size without the projection trap.
Land area seems simple until a flat world map gets involved. Countries near the poles can look much larger on a Mercator map than their measured land area justifies.
Compare Countries starts with land area because it is the most visual comparison, then lets you drag outlines onto a base country for a more direct shape comparison.
Reading the distribution
What measured area corrects on a flat map
Russia, Canada and United States of America account for about 27% of the land area represented by the map geometry. Their apparent visual sizes are nevertheless affected differently by latitude on a Mercator projection.
The ranking table provides the numeric anchor; the outline tool provides the direct shape comparison. Used together, they separate measured area from the visual distortion created by normal map position.
The largest geometry-derived land areas
Land area is useful for grounding the visual map in measured size. The table helps counter projection distortion, especially for large northern countries that can look exaggerated on familiar flat maps.

Interpretation limits
- The app uses frozen Natural Earth geometry, so values are designed for consistent visual comparison rather than legal boundary claims.
- Area is not a proxy for population, wealth, resources or power.
- Projection distortion can mislead the eye; use the ranking table and outline mode together.
How map geometry becomes an area value
Land area is derived from the frozen Natural Earth geometry using spherical polygon area. Interior holes are subtracted from exterior rings, and Antarctica is excluded from the country ranking.
The values are designed to keep the visualization internally consistent. They are not cadastral measurements and do not resolve disputed boundaries or competing legal claims.
